Modern Remodel of Highland Park Home: A Sustainable Solution

This small, modern home was originally designed by an architect as his own home in the 1970s. The modern remodel, undertaken by the Dallas residential architect, Steve Chambers, AIA, doubled the size of the original house and reoriented the view on the narrow urban lot in Highland Park in order to take full advantage of a beautiful public park to the east of the home. This not only created more space in the house, but gave the perception that the property on which it was sited was more ample and filled with park spaces. A slick industrial feel was achieved by creating a curvilinear stair with ‘shop’ finish steel and a simple coating of polyurethane, which conserved both labor and materials. The embodied energy of the home was utilized by retaining the existing foundation, framing, exterior walls, brick walls on interior, and roof. Painting the inside brick walls inside gives the home a fresh modern ‘loft’ appearance.
