This small, modern home was originally designed by an architect as his own home in the 1970s. The modern remodel, undertaken by the architect, doubled the size of the original house and reoriented the view on the narrow urban lot in Highland Park in order to take full advantage of a beautiful public park to the east of the home. This not only created more space in the house, but gave the perception that the property on which it was sited was more ample and filled with park spaces. A slick industrial feel was achieved by creating a curvilinear stair with ‘shop’ finish steel and a simple coating of polyurethane, which saved both labor and materials. The embodied energy of the home was utilized by retaining the existing exterior brick walls and painting them inside the house to give it a fresh modern ‘loft’ appearance.
