The Culture of the South of France
Provence and the South of France provide a constant palette of sight, scent, and taste. Soft clear light illuminates the contrasts of the deep blue water of the Mediterranean against the wooded and rocky hills, and fields of lavender and sunflowers. The air is filled with hints that rosemary, pine, and sage that grow nearby. French cuisine features the best of land and sea: wine, lemons, wild rice, cheeses, shellfish, and herb-filled game and fresh-caught fish. The architecture echoes this rustic and simple abundance: soft colors and patterns, rough-hewn stone, terracotta floors and roof tiles, heavy wooden beams, lime-washed, textured walls, and wooden furniture with clean lines. It’s no wonder this region attracted artists, writer, and philosophers seeking inspiration and solitude.
