The Art and Architecture of the South of France
Nothing conveys the beauty of country living quite like the South of France. Stone, tile, and rustic wood timbers in the residential architecture convey the charm of a place that borrowed its inspiration in form and details from the materials and colors in the hills, the sea, and the sky. And though many towns have their roots in Roman and medieval times, their style is still as fresh as the Mediterranean breezes and the local cuisine. Chambers Architects visited Nice, Cannes, Antibes, and St. Tropez on the coast; Grimaud, La Croix, Valmer, Ramantuelle, and Gassin in the hills. Aix-en-Provence enchanted us by its ability to keep its Impressionist’s roots vibrant in a modern university city setting. It’s no surprise that its sister city in Italy is Perugia.
